SUMMARY:World Glaucoma Congress 2015
DESCRIPTION:PGS @ WGC\nBy Dr. Grace Dizon-­Grozman \nThe 6th World Glaucoma Congress (WGC) was successfully held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center from June 6-­‐9\, 2015. WGC is one of the premier glaucoma meetings and is organized by the World Glaucoma Association (WGA). It is held every 2 years and the venue rotates throughout the different continents. The Philippine Glaucoma Society (PGS) actively participated in this year’s WGC with 31 PGS members attending\, exchanging ideas with glaucoma colleagues\, contributing to the scientific program and supporting the initiatives of the WGA. The symposium was chaired by Dr. Norman Aquino\, and the faculty were Drs. Ranier Covar\, John Mark de Leon\, Nilo Vincent Florcruz and Joseph Anthony Tumbocon. The topics lectured in this symposium included: prevalence and the burden of glaucoma\, diagnostic modalities\, techniques for monitoring of progression and surgical videos of difficult glaucoma cases. Dr. Norman Aquino delivered 2 more lectures during the course of the meeting\, namely “Medical and Surgical Treatment of Angle Closure Glaucoma” and “IOP Lowering and Disc Hemorrhage”. \nPhilippine Glaucoma Society symposium at the World Glaucoma Congress\, Hongkong Convention and Exhibition Center\, June 6\, 2015\nPGS symposium speakers @ World Glaucoma Congress 2015 (Left to right: Drs. Joseph Anthony Tumbocon and Hannah Pia De Guzman represented the PGS in the global assembly of glaucoma societies and general assembly of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA). There was a move to increase the participation of the national glaucoma societies in WGA activities\, identify areas in the world where there is lack of glaucoma specialists and to continue with worldwide awareness campaigns in glaucoma. The assembly approved the increase in the number of board of governors to involve more countries in the WGA governing body. Dr. Mario V. SUMMARY:PGS Strategic Planning 2015
DESCRIPTION:by Dr. Pamela C. Allarey \nThe annual strategic planning of the Philippine Glaucoma Society (PGS) was held last February 1- 3\, 2015 at The Manor\, Camp John Hay in Baguio City. \nTeam building activities were done on the first day while the meetings began on the second day. The objectives and performance of the society were assessed and presented by Dr. Joseph Anthony Tumbocon\, the new president of the society. Part of the objectives were: setting the standards in determining who are qualified to be considered as glaucoma specialists; formulating guidelines for glaucoma training programs in the Philippines; providing avenues for continuing medical education and exchange of ideas in glaucoma; conducting and encouraging research publication in glaucoma; promoting public awareness; upholding professional and ethical standards among glaucoma specialists; promoting local and international recognition of the society and its members; establishing linkages with other relevant scientific and non-scientific organizations locally and internationally; and to provide assistance to the Philippine Glaucoma Foundation. \nActivities for the World Glaucoma Week on March 8-14\, 2015 were discussed by Dr. Nilo Vincent Florcruz II and the PGS contributions to the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology Midyear meeting and LEAP program 2015 by Dr. John Mark de Leon. Update on the PGS research entitled “The Profile of the Glaucomas in the Philippines: Current practice patterns in diagnosis and treatment” was given by Dr. Edgar Leuenberger. Financial status of the society was discussed by Dr. Manuel Delfin Jr. and Dr. Patricia Khu\, while Dr. Cesar Perez gave an update on the PGS website and computerized open electronic medical records (EMR) as suggested by Dr. Alexander Joseph Reyes. \nThe plans for the Philippine Glaucoma Foundation (PGF) were presented by Dr. Benjamin Abela Jr.\, the president of the Executive Committee. The new structure of the foundation was introduced; including the Board of Trustees chaired by Dr. Mario Yatco and the different committee heads. \nDr. Mario V. Aquino led the oath taking ceremonies of the new PGS officers: Dr. Joseph Anthony Tumbocon as president\, Dr. Ma. Margarita Lat-Luna as VP\, Dr. Maria Hannah Pia de Guzman as Secretary\, Dr Manuel Delfin Jr. as Treasurer\, and Dr. Jose Ma. Martinez\, Dr. Nilo Vincent Florcruz II\, Dr. Benjamin Abela Jr.\, and Dr. Rommel Bautista as board members. Dr. Aldo-Mar Cariaga was likewise inducted as a new member of the PGS. \nDr. Manuel Agulto headed the oath taking ceremonies of the new officers and board of trustees of PGF. The officers of PGF are Dr. Benjamin Abela Jr. as President\, Dr. Rommel Bautista as VP\, Dr. Ernesto Pangalangan as Secretary\, and Dr. Rigo Daniel Reyes as Treasurer. The PGF Board of Trustees are: Dr. Mario Yatco as Chairman\, Dr. Patricia Khu as Vice Chairman\, Dr. Norman Aquino\, Dr. Manolito Reyes\, and Dr. Jose Maria Martinez as members. \nThe strengths\, weaknesses\, opportunities and threats to the society were carefully discussed and evaluated and action plans were made. All members of the society signed up for the realization of these plans with a clear goal in mind: to uplift the quality of glaucoma care in the Philippines.

DESCRIPTION:PGS Welcomes New Officers and Members 2015 – 2016\nby Dr. Pamela C. Allarey \nThe Philippine Glaucoma Society (PGS) elected its board of directors and officers for the term 2015-2016. The officers elected were Drs. Joseph Anthony Tumbocon as president\, Ma. Margarita Lat-Luna as vice president; Maria Hannah Pia de Guzman as secretary; and Manuel Delfin Jr. as Treasurer. Other board members chosen were Drs. Benjamin Abela Jr.\, Rommel Bautista\, Nilo Vincent Florcruz II\, Jose Ma. Martinez\, and Alexander Joseph Reyes. The election was held at the SMX Convention Center on November 12\, 2014 and was presided by Dr. Manolito Reyes\, a past PGS president and 2014 Comelec head. Outgoing PGS president\, Dr. Jose Maria Martinez conducted a business meeting prior to the election and endorsed projects that need to be continued by the incoming set of officers. Two new members of the society were also accepted earlier that day after an applicant evaluation process conducted by the current board and past presidents of the PGS. The new members are Maria Catherina G. Coronel-Nasol\, who practices in Pampanga and Metro Manila\, and Aldo- Mar Cariaga from Baguio City. \nOn November 13\, 2014\, A/P Paul Chew from the National University Hospital in Singapore was also awarded honorary membership status to the society for his contributions to Philippine ophthalmology\, namely his collaboration with Philippine glaucoma specialists in research and education\, and his supervision of numerous local and international research students and seventeen clinical fellows\, nine of which are Filipinos.
